American Idol Goes to Disney World

Okay, so I know I said I wasn’t going to try to break the latest and greatest Disney news on this blog… but, when my favorite Idol, David Cook, announced that he was going to Disney World, I couldn’t resist posting the video up here.  In an effort to promote their new “American Idol Experience” attraction, Disney cleverly gave Cook an honor typically reserved solely for athletes… he’s going to Disney World.  The commercial is everything you would want a Disney/ Idol collaboration to be, and, yes, that is Cook singing When You Wish Upon a Star in the background.  So, enjoy the video, and if anyone has an idea for how I can convince David to let me give him a tour of Disneyland next… let me know 😉

This just in…

I spent some time this week checking out some of my favorite blogs on the web, trying to determine my ultimate goal in creating content for Rays of Disneyland.  I found that most of the webpages dedicated to Disneyland provided the latest and greatest news from the world of Disney… and I love that… but, that’s not me.

For me, the best part of Disneyland is the feeling that I get when I walk onto Main Street and the years seem to fade away and I am a child once again… the way Disneyland envelops you and whisks you away from this world and into one where pirate ships fly, submarines really are yellow and people wait in line to see a mouse.
This is the Disneyland that I am trying to capture here.  I want this to be a place where people can come together and hold on to a little piece of that magical feeling that we experience upon entering that Happy Place.

Confessions of a Disney Shop-aholic

So, the saying goes, “Those who can’t… teach.”  For me, it’s more like this: “Those who can’t shop everyday at Disneyland, find the next best thing.”  Yes, it’s true, I am a die-hard Disney Shop-aholic.  The Cast Members at every Disney Store in town know me by name and I’ll admit to spending a fair amount of time browsing the “Disneyana” section on eBay.  But, the true pinnacle of my Disney collecting obsession is when the AMS Disney Character Warehouse comes to town.

The Character Warehouse stocks all of the amazing clothes, pins and kitsch that I see at Disneyland… but, at a considerably reduced price.  It is Disney shopping heaven!  And, yes, if there was a support group for this I would be automatically enrolled.  Until that day comes, however, join the fun and check out the AMS website to see if the warehouse is coming to a town near you…  Enjoy, but beware the addiction… properly warned ye be says I…

The mark of a true fanatic.  A camera phone shot of the outlet in the mall.

Disneyland’s Iconic Chef Oscar

Die-hard Disney fans all know that every trip to Disney has to include a few special traditions… whether it be the left or right tunnel that you always enter through, the first attraction you have to ride, or the one meal you can’t miss… one of the most magical parts of any Disneyland visit is making sure there is time for all of your “can’t-miss” traditions.
For me, the one tradition that absolutely can’t be missed is having my first vacation meal at the Carnation Cafe on Main Street.  On my last visit to the resort, I had the pleasure of meeting the cafe’s iconic Head Chef, Oscar.

Oscar has been with the park longer than any other Cast Member… 50+ years and counting.  Being the Disney Freak (or “geek” as it may be) that I am, I absolutely had to have my picture with this man who has dedicated his life and career to Disneyland and to carrying out the highest standards of Disney Guest Service. Oscar was everything I hoped he would be… pleasant, sweet and accommodating.
For more info on Oscar and his 50th Anniversary with the park, check out my favorite podcast, Window to the Magic.  Mousketeer Greg had the rare opportunity of being in the cafe when Oscar was presented with his anniversary cake.  This is a must-view videocast for any Carnation Cafe fan!  You can find Greg’s Perfect Day at Disneyland Episode Six, Traditions either on the official Window to the Magic website or by downloading through iTunes.

Mother’s Day – Disney Style

Everyone knows that Christmas is a magical time at Disneyland, and, recently, there has been a major push to spend Halloween in the parks.  But, Disney has a way of making every occasion special, magical and wonderful… and who would expect anything else!

Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to visit the Disneyland Resort.  Guests will find that mothers get a little extra attention and the Disneyland Hotel offers an absolutely phenomenal character buffet.  This captivating, albeit extravagant, buffet has been a tradition for my family for years. We’ve seen the character theming change from Mary Poppins, to Princesses, to, most recently, Alice in Wonderland, but the magic has always stayed the same.  The ballroom at the Disneyland Hotel is decked out with an enormous spread of every delicacy you can imagine, and even a Grand Piano, complete with pianist carving out classic Disney tunes.  Oh, and might I recommend the mousse filled, white chocolate, “glass” slipper… yes, this isn’t your average holiday buffet!
Have a special holiday memory about Disneyland?  Feel free to leave a comment and share it with Rays of Disneyland readers!  Happy Mother’s Day!
Quick Tip:  The Official Disneyland website doesn’t offer much information on these “minor” holiday events, so call ahead if you are planning a visit during holidays other than Christmas or Halloween.
