Lattes, Ringtones, and Disneyland
It’s funny what triggers memories in our minds… sights, smells, sounds can all recall such strong emotions and memories. For me, these are usually Disney memories… what a surprise! But, recalling some of the sweetest moments in life is a great way to get through a long day. One of my favorite feelings is when an unexpected memory pops up into an otherwise ordinary day, bringing with it a healthy dose of Pixie Dust.
The supermarket down the street from my office building sells their version of a flavored latte. While this is a far cry from that gourmet coffee most of America is addicted to (admittedly myself included), I often find myself sneaking out for an afternoon supermarket coffee break simply because the vanilla latte smells just like the Main Street Bakery.
Similarly (and perhaps embarrassingly) I have the text message alert on my cell phone set to play the banjo music from the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. Yes, as you are probably thinking, this is endlessly annoying to my non-Disney friends and co-workers, but just the first note of the song takes me floating away past the Blue Bayou and down the waterfall where “Dead Men Tell No Tales.”

I love Disneyland and have so many fond memories. I too, get a warm fuzzy when something triggers a memory. My fondest memory is taking my 4-year-old daughter to Disneyland for the first time and seeing it through her eyes. She had truly entered a magical land. Upon entering the gates, we met Pluto, and she instantly became a Disney fan. After that, we spent more time trying to track down characters than actually ride the rides (we did that on our second visit) . Meeting Cinderella was so very cool, but her favorite was Ariel. First, we met Ariel in the park as a mermaid and then met her again at Ariel’s Grotto with legs. Lauren cried out “She’s a human!” Poor Belle, who was visiting our table at the time, got the shaft. Our picture of Lauren and Belle has Lauren’s head turned in Ariel’s direction while Belle is holding out her hands for a hug.

What a great memory! I’ve yet to experience the magic of Disney with children of my own, but from watching others, I know that the look in a child’s eye when they meet a character for the first time is truly inexplicable. Thanks for sharing this lovely memory 🙂
